Your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nepal begins with an early morning transfer to Nepalgunj Airport. Located in the southern plains of Nepal, Nepalgunj serves as a critical transit hub for pilgrims headed towards the sacred regions of Tibet. You will board a fixed-wing aircraft operated by experienced local carriers, embarking on a scenic and adventurous 45-minute flight towards Simikot — a remote high-altitude town tucked into the Himalayan folds of far-western Nepal. Scenic Himalayan Flight The aerial route from Nepalgunj to Simikot is more than just a transit—it is a visual introduction to the sacred Himalayan landscape. As the aircraft ascends, the lush lowlands gradually give way to forested ridges, dramatic valleys, and snow-draped mountain peaks. This flight covers approximately 297 kilometers, offering spectacular views of the Karnali River basin, isolated hamlets, and ridgelines cloaked in mist and prayer flags. Travel Advisory: This flight sector is highly weather-dependent, and delays are common due to cloud cover or strong winds. Our team constantly monitors real-time weather updates to ensure you fly on the earliest and safest available slot. Arrival at Simikot (2,910 m) Upon landing at Simikot Airport, you’ll be greeted by the Travelpocket ground team and escorted to your pre-arranged guesthouse. Simikot, at nearly 3,000 meters elevation, serves as the acclimatization base for pilgrims before entering the higher altitudes of Tibet. Luggage will be managed by our porters, allowing you to rest and adapt to the mountain air. The rest of the day is reserved for acclimatization, a critical step to reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). You may explore the surroundings of Simikot—a traditional village town rich in culture and panoramic Himalayan views. The day is deliberately kept light to help your body prepare for further elevation gains in the coming days. Arrival in Simikot – Gateway to the Himalayas Route: Nepalgunj ? Rise before dawn and step outside your guesthouse to witness a mystical spectacle — the Golden Kailash, a sacred moment when the first rays of sunlight gently illuminate Mount Kailash, bathing its snow-capped peak in shimmering gold. This magical sunrise is not just a visual wonder, but a spiritual calling — a moment of connection, reflection, and deep inner peace on your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
This early hour is known to be filled with rare spiritual energies. Silence the mind, stay present, and you may feel an otherworldly stillness, as if the abode of Lord Shiva is speaking to your soul.
After soaking in this divine energy, prepare yourself for the most intense day of your spiritual adventure — the 19-kilometer Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk trek, crossing the formidable Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest altitude point of the Mount Kailash Parikrama.
Roughly an hour into the journey, you'll come across Shiva Tsal (Shiva Sthal) — a spiritually symbolic spot where pilgrims perform the ritual of renunciation. Here, people leave behind a piece of clothing, a strand of hair, or even a drop of blood — symbolizing a release of their worldly burdens and an offering of rebirth and transformation.
Next comes the steep ascent to Dolma La, a test of both physical stamina and mental resolve. At the summit, take a moment to pause — not just to catch your breath, but to absorb the immense spiritual vibration of this sacred pass.
As you descend from Dolma La, keep your eyes to the right — you’ll see the serene Gauri Kund (Parvati Kund), a pristine high-altitude lake closely linked to Goddess Parvati's spiritual devotion. Many pilgrims stop here briefly for a moment of silent prayer or darshan.
The path ahead flattens out gradually, but the thin air and earlier exhaustion can still challenge your pace. Walk slowly, stay hydrated, and move together with your group. The final stretch to Zuthulpuk is peaceful, allowing time for introspection and gratitude.
Quick Overview:
The Mount Kailash Parikrama begins with a thrilling drive from Darchen to Sershung, followed by the start of the 12 km trek toward Dirapuk, located at the foot of Mount Kailash. Known as the sacred circumambulation (kora), this trek is a profound spiritual experience, offering pilgrims a close view of the sacred South Face of Mount Kailash and the Yam Dwar (the Gate to Moksha).
The day starts early, giving you the option to visit Lake Mansarovar for a holy bath and puja if you wish to do so. Ensure that you discuss this with your guide in advance for a smooth experience.
After breakfast, the group will drive 35 kilometers towards Darchen, a bustling settlement near Mount Kailash where you’ll find various hotels, guest houses, shops, and markets. From Darchen, we continue the drive for another 6 km to Tarboche, where the parikrama officially begins.
Upon reaching Tarboche, you’ll get the first stunning view of Mount Kailash. The iconic Yam Dwar (Gate to Moksha) is just a short walk away and marks the start of the trek. Yam Dwar is a spiritual landmark where pilgrims traditionally pray for liberation and peace. After offering prayers, you’ll continue the trek towards Dirapuk, a distance of 12 km that will take approximately 4-6 hours to complete.
This day’s trek is mostly flat with some slight ups and downs. However, due to the high altitude (over 5000 meters), the lack of oxygen may cause fatigue and make the trek a bit challenging. It’s essential to walk slowly, stay hydrated, and take breaks as needed.
We will make a stop at a tea stall en route where you can buy additional water and juices.
After completing the trek, we’ll reach Dirapuk, where you’ll be able to see the majestic North Face Mount Kailash, a black diamond-shaped peak standing tall. This is one of the most sacred and awe-inspiring views on the parikrama.
At Dirapuk, pilgrims can meditate and take pictures of the mesmerizing Mount Kailash North Face. Prepare for the cold evening by resting in the guesthouse.
